The main thing to remember is this construction:

Subject	avoir or être in the present	Past participle
Vous	avez	mangé	tôt.
J'	ai	terminé	mon travail à 14:00.
Je	suis	parti	à la piscine.
Nous	sommes	allés	en vacances à Royan.

Unlike English language, the auxiliary (auxiliaire in French) can be either to have (avoir) or to be (être)!
